PROGRAMMES BY RESEARCH

Graduate programmes under this structure are for both Masters and Doctoral level programme emphasize mostly on research as the major requirement for attaining the degrees. While there is no specific number of credits required to enroll some courses to strengthen their knowledge base. They are also required to participate in academic discussions and seminar presentations. At the end of the programme, they are required to submit a thesis to the Thesis Examination Committee as a significant contribution the knowledge mastered in the chosen field.

ENTRY REQUIREMENT

Candidates who wish to enter into the postgraduate programmes must have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 or equivalent from UMT or any other higher institution recognised by Senate; or
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field with a CGPA below 2.75 or equivalent qualification and possesses evidence of relevant and adequate research or work experience recognised by the Senate; or
  • The highest grade certificate of competency for unrestricted service as Master Mariner (Master of Vessel 3000 GT or more Unlimited Trade Voyage approved by the government or equivalent) or Chief Engineer (Chief Engineer of Vessel 3000 GT or more Unlimited Trade Voyage approved by the government or equivalent); or
  • The certificate of competency as Chief Mate of Vessel 3000 GT or more Unlimited Voyage approved by the government or equivalent or Second Engineer of Vessel 3000 GT or more Unlimited Voyage approved by the government or equivalent, and minimum of five (5) years working experience in the relevant field as accepted by the Senate.
  • Any other academic qualification in related field and possesses evidence of adequate research or work experience recognised by the Senate;
  • Must fulfil other requirements as specified by respective school or institute.
  • Master’s degree from UMT or any other higher institution recognised by the Senate; or
  • Any other qualification equivalent to a Master’s degree and possesses evidence of adequate research or work experience recognised by the Senate; or
  • Outstanding Master student from UMT who has been approved for conversion; or
  • Must fulfil other requirements as specified by respective school or institute.

OTHERS REQUIREMENT

a. General requirements:

i. Band of 5.0 and above in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
ii. Score of 500 (PBT), 173 (CBT) or 60 (IBT) and above in Test of English Language as a Foreign
Language (TOEFL); or
iii. Band of 3 and above in Malaysian University English Test (MUET); or
iv. Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B1.

b. Exemption is given to:

i. Internationalstudents from countries using English as the official language (See Appendix A)
ii. International students whose academic qualifications were those from the institutions that use
English as the main medium of instruction and intend to pursue higher education in Malaysia.
Note: Evidence must be submitted

c. For international students who do not meet the English language requirements, the term of the
conditional offer for the MUET examination or any examination that is aligned to the Common European
Framework of Reference (CEFR)* according to the general requirements set is before graduating from
UMT.

*Note: Examinations that are aligned to the CEFR:
i. Cambridge English Placement Test (CEPT);or
ii. Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE);or
iii. English Test Aptis (British Council).

d. International students who fail to meet the conditional offer on the subject (c) will not be approved for
graduation.

e. International students are encouraged to attend an internal English Preparatory Course at UMT
without any specific time period, but they are still subject to the rules of the Immigration Department of
Malaysia.

*Note: English Preparatory courses available:
i. Academic English for Postgraduate 1 (BBBA4012);or
ii. Academic English for Postgraduate 2 (BBBA4022);or
iii. English For MUET (BBB1013).

f. International students who are attending the internal English Preparatory Courses must sit for the
MUET exam or any of the examinations that are aligned to the Common European Framework of
Reference (CEFR) in accordance with the general requirements before graduating from UMT.

Application must be submitted to the Postgraduate Management Centre within the stipulated deadline.

The offer letter will be issued by the Postgraduate Management Centre after due consideration by
respective school/institute

Full Offer
An applicant who meets all the requirements may be offered full admission.

Conditional Offer
An applicant may be given a conditional offer if he/ she has met partial requirements stipulated by the
respective school/institute. However, a full offer is required for registration.

Direct Offer
An applicant who has fulfilled the following criteria may be given a direct offer by the school/institute.
a. For Master possesses a first class degree or equivalent for his/her highest qualification; or
b. For PhD. has as received an outstanding recognition in his/ her Master studies; and/or
c. Has received a prestigious scholarship for any of to offers.

Offer for Non-Graduating Students
This offer may be given by the respective school/ institute under special arrangement for either local or
internationalstudent exchange programme.

All students irrespective of types of offer may be required to register for academic courses specified by
respective school / institute.

a) Duration of study for full time and part time student :

b) Candidature of a students who failed to complete his/her study within the maximum duration of
study shall be terminated.
* Under certain circumstances, UMT may waive the required Duration of Study.
