RESEARCH INTEREST
My research interest is on using genetic tools in improving aquaculture production, particularly in identifying candidate gene corresponding to traits of interest in aquaculture species. Among the important aquaculture species is the freshwater giant prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii. It has been translocated from its natural habitats to other parts of the world and remains the most widely use Macrobrachium species for commercial farming. Majority of the broodstock used in aquaculture come from unimproved wild phenotypes. Thus, research on the application of molecular tools in particular candidate gene approach has the potential to increase aquaculture production further while avoiding the problem caused by inbreeding. Our current efforts are to identify the best stocks from Malaysian waters to be utilised in breeding program. My current research also includes genetic connectivity and phylogenetic of marine invertebrates including giant clam from the islands of Peninsular Malaysia.
